Divination

Who has not been tempted to read a horoscope, pull a tarot card, have a palm read, tea leaves stared at or consulted oracles? An innate desire ‘to know’, for fun, for help, for comfort, seems to be a part of how we are made up and the curiosity to ‘know what is going on’ can be met in so many ways. Divination is a long established method to see ‘what is going on now’.

I have trained in cowrie shell divination, which involves acknowledging the forces that can guide our lives. In this Dagara tradition, taught to me by the late Malidoma Some, the forces includes nature elements and ancestors.

The person being divined for is introduced to an array of stones, shells, rings, coins and other small items spread on cloth. They then move these around and the pattern this creates allows me, in conversation with them, to share insight about what can be going on in that person’s life.

This is not about predicting a future or uncovering your ‘fate’. Divination can be helpful when considering choices before you, and to gain an understanding of events going on in your life. Often there will be the possibility of some action you can take to move things on. It is not about submitting to the inevitable, your so called ‘fate’, rather, considering the options you have and then choosing with more information than you would have had without a divination.

I was taught divination by the late Malidoma Some, Dagara elder and shaman, who always brought humour and kindness, as well as profound insight, to the work he did.

All sorts of prompts, unseen nudges, moods or concerns might suggest to you a divination is a helpful thing to ask for.

This cowrie shell divination typically takes about an hour. It can be done face to face or on-line. A divination can often give additional insights and deepen the understanding of what is going on in your world. For whatever reason you find yourself reading about divination, do not be put off by the unfamiliarity of the process, typically it seems very normal once you get going. Let's talk about it.

For some people this is a rare activity, that they have been brought to by crisis or difficulty. You are looking for answers, to fix something, sometimes you come confused and hurting. Others use divination as extra life guidance, e.g. in choosing where to live, town or the country, perhaps you are trying to gain insight into a new job or trip you are about to go on. Whatever has brought you here, don't hesitate to be in touch.
